The image above shows two paintings; on the left is Matisse's Notre-Dame in the Late afternoon, 1902, and on the right is Diebenkorn's Ingleside, 1963. I was at a museum exhibit that compared these two painter's works, and felt a little loss that mathematics faculty don't get to have similar conversations, comparisons, and inspirations about teaching. Much of what we do is done hidden behind our office doors, on scraps of paper few people get to see, and we present to people who (rightfully) are struggling with big ideas and concepts we are trying to convey, who might not see the nuances in what we do. If you are reading this I hope you feel the same way, and that we will pull back the curtain together.
